Statement of Support
We, the members of the History Graduate Student Organization at the University of Kansas, support the campus-wide efforts to combat racism and other forms of discrimination at our university. We fully affirm the statement released on November 18, 2015 by the History Department.
In terms of our own responsibilities, as graduate students who lead discussion sections and also teach courses, we are wholly committed to fostering hospitable and inclusive academic environments. History is nothing without diversity across space and time, and we reject as ahistorical and inaccurate any attempt at homogenizing the past. We are committed to working with our department on developing anonymous, end-of-semester assessments to foster critical reflection upon professional behavior in the classroom. We invite the rest of the university to join us in developing the same.
The undergraduate major in History requires all students to study diverse eras from across the world’s cultures. As a course of academic study, ours is also a model of civic engagement in our pluralistic world. Let us all recommit ourselves to these ideals as we move forward.
