Melissa was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa.  She earned a BS in Secondary Education focusing on American History, World History and Government at Drake University.  She moved to Kansas eleven years ago with her husband due to him receiving a job transfer.  

Since arriving in Kansas she accepted a job teaching 8th grade US history in the Olathe School District.  She has received a Masters in Arts of Teaching from Webster University and a Masters in American History from KU. 

When not teaching she can be found with her bulldogs and at her son's soccer games.  She also volunteers her time working with students for history contests and has served as a judge for Kansas History Day projects for several years.
